iaedpNY Chapter Updates

Dear Friends,

What an amazing turn out we had this past Friday at our early summer presentation “Two Bodies in the Room.” Thank you to the Oliver-Pyatt Centers and staff, especially Ibbits Newhall, Dr. Wendy Oliver-Pyatt, Dr. Karin Lawson, and Dr. Melissa Spann. For more information on OPC please visit www.oliverpyattcenters.com. This was our first ever sold out event. We had 60 professionals and students attend with many more wait listed. You can read about this fabulous learning experience in our next iaedp NY chapter newsletter due out at the end of June and most importantly, be sure to register for our next events early.

We have new and exciting events scheduled. Starting this July, iaedp NY is happy to offer its members free evening networking events called Meet and Greets. In addition, we offer amazing presentations and education opportunities with highly regarded professionals in the eating disorder community. In order to attend our social Meet and Greets, please make sure your membership is up to date by reading our membership chair’s “Membership 101″ below. The July 17th event at 6:30 pm is a fun way to network with medical doctors interested in working with or already working with patients who have eating disorders and eating disorder professionals. This is an after work event that allows for socializing, building community and of course, establishing rapport for referrals. Please check your email for the SAVE THE DATE due out in the next two weeks and then the invite due out June 17th. If you are a member and do not receive an invite, please contact me directly at cipulloRD@gmail.com. Please see the calendar of events located to the right to ensure you make it to our next event.

Finally, we are sending out a detailed survey via survey monkey to help us, the iaedp NY board, meet your needs. Be sure to complete the survey. You will be entered into our free give-away!!

Special thanks to Oliver-Pyatt Centers for sponsoring our Friday event and Hazelden for providing free space. Gratitude to The Beacon Program for sponsoring our next event July 17th.

Wishing you health and happiness!

Two Bodies in the Room: Using authentic connection and self-awareness for effective body image treatment

Body image is a necessary focus of treatment with eating disordered clients. Within body image therapy, therapists are using their own bodies as a treatment tool whether they are aware or not. It is inevitable that patients harbor thoughts/feelings about their therapist’s body and vice verse. Clinical examples of how seasoned clinicians experience their bodies and use their bodies while striving to remain authentic and honest in the therapeutic relationship, maintaining appropriate boundaries, coping with client discourse regarding therapist body, weight and size, and weighing self-disclosure options when/if appropriate will be shared.
